I haven't seen any other mention of this, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the 5x supports MiFare Classic 1k and 4k tags. This means that the NFC chip must be from NXP, which is big news to an NFC nerd like me.
In short words: The Nexus android phones can read and write most NFC tags available. I was even able to communicate with german passports, at least to that part where the encryption starts. The ordinary RFID tags you may find on some products or in access-regulated areas can mostly be read but you'll need a lot of code and experience.Information on the Google Nexus 5X's NFC function. Includes which NFC tags work best and whether you need an App to be able to read/write NFC tags. Does a buzzcard use RFID? I found a fingerprint reader for that should also serve my purpose of authentication, but if buzzcards use RFID, it might be cheaper for me. Alternatively, I was thinking of using an NFC chip with my Nexus 5x.

A thoroughly modern Nexus device for a sensible price. 5.2-inch screen is sharp, vibrant, and just the right size. Same camera as the Nexus 6P; images look boss.
