Are you sure you bought a 5V smartmedia card? XP-30 uses the older sm standard (5V instead of newer 3.3V) so you need to hunt one down. Roland model codes were something like S2M-5 and S4M-5 for the 2MB and 4MB . The only cards I could find were 4 MB. All the large electronics stores sell the 3.3V and not the 5V which is needed. You may be able to get an 8 MB card at Guitar Center.
